Father’s Day is just around the corner and for that very special moment your dad will take centre stage at home – all food, presents and TV time is solely his. While your dad may feel like the A-list celebrity in the family for the day there are some whose job is to perform in front of millions of fans – they’re actors, musicians and athletes such as David Beckham and Donald Sutherland. However, they’re not alone, many of their sons have followed in their footsteps joining them on the silver screen, on the playing field and in the music industry. Here are six famous celebrity fathers and sons.
Alan and Robin Thicke
You know Alan Thicke from the 1980s TV sitcom Growing Pains where he played the character Jason Seaver. His son Robin followed his footsteps by pursuing a career in the entertainment industry; as a producer, song writer and singer Robin Thicke took 2013’s music charts by storm with his breakout song “Blurred Lines,” but he really made pop culture history by being the twerk toy of Miley Cyrus at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards – click here to relive the very moment.
Archie, Cooper, Eli and Peyton Manning
The Mannings are one of the most influential families in pro sports history; father Archie was an NFL quarterback in the70s and 80s who then passed on his work ethic and athletic DNA to his three sons; Cooper, Eli and Peyton who all went onto become prominent figures in football in their own right. In 2013 ESPN developed a documentary called The Book of Manning which delved into the family patriarch’s life and the careers of his sons – you can view it online here albeit illegally.
Bob, Damian, Stephen and Ziggy Marley
Internationally acclaimed reggae artist Bob Marley is best known for songs like “One Love,” “Exodus” and “Redemption Song” but he also was the father to 11 children – yes he had 11 children! The most notable of his progeny are sons Damian, Stephen and Ziggy who all happen to inherit their father’s musical talents and love for reggae.
David, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz Beckham
By the way David and Victoria Beckham are popping out children you think they we’re planning to create their own private soccer team; the couple has three sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, and one daughter named Harper together. David Beckham is regularly pictured out and about in Hollywood with his mini-mes and during his final outing with the L.A. Galaxy he brought his sons out onto the soccer field to celebrate.
Donald and Kiefer Sutherland
You know legendary Canadian actor Donald Sutherland from movies like The Dirty Dozen, Outbreak and, most recently, as the villainous President Snow in The Hunger Games. His son, actor Kiefer Sutherland is every guy’s hero and has appeared in numerous films, which include Young Guns (1988) and The Three Musketeers (1993), but he’s most famous for his role as Jack Bauer in the TV action-thriller 24. Canada’s best known father and son acting duo have starred in two films together to date; Max Dugan Returns (1983) and A Time to Kill (1996), and are scheduled to pair up in an upcoming western movie currently titled Redemption which is being filed in Calgary, Alberta.
Will and Jaden Smith
The family that plays together stays together; however, they don’t necessarily make good movies together such as in the case of Will and Jaden Smith. We all know Will Smith from this role as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the 90s and blockbuster movies such as 1996’s Independence Day and 2001’s Ali. However, when he teamed up with son Jaden for the science fiction film After Earth (2013), well… let’s just say they didn’t get any Oscar nods and the critics weren’t too kind to them either; Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal called it “Muddle-‘Earth’.” And to top it off, the elder Smith won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actor – ouch!
