Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington is opening up about sexism in Hollywood. Harington, best known for his role of Jon Snow on HBO’s hit fantasy drama series, believes that there is a “double standard” towards men in showbiz and says he has even been a victim himself.
The 29-year-old actor told the Sunday Times in a new interview that he feels like he has been objectified in the past during interviews and photo shoots. According to Harington, sexism against male actors in Hollywood is actually a much bigger issue than the public would expect.
“I think there is a double standard,” Harington said. “If you said to a girl, ‘Do you like being called a babe?’ and she said, ‘No, not really,’ she’d be absolutely right.”
“I like to think of myself as more than a head of hair or a set of looks,” he added. “It’s demeaning. Yes, in some ways you could argue I’ve been employed for a look I have. But there’s a sexism that happens towards men.”
Further driving his point home, Harington explains what he believes sexism toward women in the film industry is like, saying: “There’s definitely a sexism in our industry that happens towards women, and there is towards men as well. At some points during photoshoots when I’m asked to strip down, I felt that.”
