July 2016 Primer: The Sports, Movies, Streaming Options And More Headed Your Way This Month

It’s finally July, and we’re still recovering from the long weekend. We’ve practically been living on the patio these last few days. And while the weather has been giving us every reason to stay outdoors, there’s an insane amount of movies trying to reel us inside. Look we get it, the weather is beautiful, so we’ll suggest some alternatives and let you work on that glorious tan.

Ghostbusters (July 15)
Bridesmaids director Paul Feig takes the reins of the highly anticipated Ghostbusters reboot. After decades of waiting, we’re now just days away from seeing the infamous franchise back on the big screen. The intrigue is at an all-time high, and it’s up to new franchise stars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Chris Hemsworth, to deliver the goods. All eyes will be on Ghostbusters when it hits theatres across the country on July 15.

Also in theatres (Various Dates)
Blockbuster season is finally in full effect. Both Star Trek and the Bourne series will unleash their latest installments, and they’ll receive proper competition from legendary director, Steven Spielberg. Star Trek Beyond, Jason Bourne, and the animated fantasy BFG, are all landing on the silver screen later this month. Lots of popcorn will be ingested. We may have to buy a ticket to everything this July.

Netflix (Various Dates)
There are some wicked Netflix premieres in the next coming weeks. Most exciting, is the arrival of last year’s biggest release, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Fighting for attention is Marvel favorite, Guardians Of The Galaxy. If that wasn’t enough, Netflix original BoJack Horseman, returns for its third season.

Euro Cup Final (July 10)
Soccer’s biggest stars hit the pitch this Sunday, for the Euro Cup Final. Four teams remain, and only one will be crowned European Champion. Don’t forget to watch the always compelling semi-finals, later this week. Two of Portugal, Wales, Germany, or host nation France, will clash in Saint-Denis. The Euro Cup Final airs July 10, 3:00PM Eastern Time.

Also In Sports (Various dates throughout July)
Tennis and cyclist enthusiasts are in for a treat. Wimbledon reaches an end on July 10th, while the Tour De France is geared up all the way through the 24th. For non-hardcore fans, these events always gather interest towards the end. If tennis or cycling aren’t necessarily your thing, try giving it a shot this year.

In Your Ears (Various dates throughout July)
We may be lucky enough to get albums that we’ve waited seemingly forever for. Frank Ocean has consistently, and cruelly, teased his long-awaited “Boys Don’t Cry”, and has been alluding to an official release towards the end of the month. The UK’s Avalanches will also reappear after an incredible, 16 year hiatus. Along with these two massive LPs, Schoolboy Q and pop singer Shura, will deliver their respective and equally ambitious full-lengths.

Music Festivals (Various dates throughout July)
Some of Canada’s biggest festivals including WayHome, Osheaga, VELD, and OVO Fest will all get the party started this month. Osheaga headliners Radiohead, will be complemented by appearances from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, and Disclosure among others. EDM juggernaut, VELD, will bring out the glow sticks on the 30th and 31st, while OVO fest will be full of surprises the same weekend. People will also be flooding to Barrie and Orillia to see WayHome headliners, Arcade Fire, The Killers, and LCD Soundsystem.
