This Year Marks The Most Successful Movember Yet

Every year, men everywhere risk alienating the women in their lives by growing a mustache. But luckily, it’s for a good cause. This year, Movember, a global charity that raises money and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer research and men’s mental health, surpassed all expectations. More than $75 million was raised globally, with over $20 million coming from Canada alone.

115,000 Canadians participated in Movember by creating an account at Movember.com and becoming a Mo Bro or a Mo Sista. Men were encouraged to grow a mustache for the month of November, spread the word about Movember, and it’s impact on men’s health awareness, and then collect donations. While women can’t exactly grow a mustache, their support of the men in their lives’ carefully crafted facial hair is always appreciated.

“It’s with thanks to all our Mo Bros and Mo Sistas who donate and make their support count that Canada once again leads as the top fundraising nation,” said Pete Bombaci, Country Director, Movember Canada. “To be able to share with our community that our funds have lead to a prostate cancer research breakthrough championed right here in Canada is truly remarkable. It’s why we mo.”

This year in particular, the funds raised during Movember have led to a huge breakthrough in prostate cancer research. Led by Professor Robert Bristow on the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, researchers have discovered that men have a genetic “fingerprint” within their cancer cells that will tell them whether or not the cells have escaped the prostate gland. This will allow doctors to tailor their treatment plan according the how aggressive the patient’s cancer is, which will lead to higher cure rates.

The Movember Foundation plans to invest the money raised in the best men’s health programs across the country, and continue to change the face of men’s health. If you haven’t donated yet, there is still time! Go to Movember.com to check out the mustache Hall of Fame, and contribute to a great cause.
