Converse’s iconic Chuck Taylor All Star sneaker is getting an update. Yes, nearly a century after its original debut in 1917, the Nike brand has unveiled a new version of the iconic canvas sneaker, which is set to hit shelves next week.
The release marks an effort by Converse to update the iconic shoe. The goal? Update with premium materials and offer superior comfort, while retaining the basic attributes that have made the sneakers so popular throughout the years, especially with members of the creative crowd.
Dubbed the Chuck Taylor All Star II, the line extension looks almost identical to your classic Chucks. The revamped shoe still features a canvas exterior (although now in premium canvas), the instantly recognizable capped rubber toe, and the circular “All Star” patch on the ankle. But, the inside of the Chuck Taylor All Star II features plenty of innovative updates including: a padded no-slip tongue, a perforated micro-suede lining for comfort, unique white foxing, and a more cushioned sole with plenty of arch support thanks to Nike’s infamous Lunarlon cushioning foam technology.
The updates are ground-breaking for the company, but Converse is quick to note that the Chuck Taylor All Star II is not a replacement or a special edition; it’s an update and an addition to the original, iconic sneaker.
“The Chuck Taylor All Star is one of the most legendary and iconic sneakers of all time,” Converse CEO Jim Calhoun said at a launch event in Boston. “The launch of Chuck II is a groundbreaking moment for Converse as we continue to move the brand forward through creativity and innovation, ushering in not just a new sneaker, but a completely new way of thinking.”
The new Converse Chuck Taylor All Star II is set to hit store shelves across the globe on Tuesday July 28 in black, white, red and blue. In Canada the sneakers will be available at Little Burgundy, Foot Locker, X20, Get Outside, Neon, Gravity Pope and Baggins. The price: $80 for the high-tops and $75 for the low-cut oxfords.
