Flu season is in full affect. Noses are running, throats are raw, fevers are running high, and people are generally miserable.
Luckily, The Kitchn has a solution that will help ease the pain of flu sufferers everywhere: a cocktail.
Yes, a cocktail. It’s called the “Bourbon Cough Syrup for Grownups”, and it’s delicious.
The most important ingredient in this flu-fighter is bourbon — though other forms of whiskey like Scotch or rye will probably do the trick. The other ingredients in this tincture are honey, lemon juice, and for those who have a tough time stomaching whiskey, water for the purpose of dilution.
Honey, in case you didn’t know, is a natural cough suppressant, decongestant and sleep aid. Even more importantly, it’s also a natural antibiotic. Lemon juice, meanwhile, is loaded with vitamin C, which will help your immune system get back into fighting shape. Whiskey, finally, as dozens of cowboys, writers, and even a few scientists have told us, will simply cure what ails ya.
All this to say that these ingredients have definite health benefits, and when they’re combined into a cocktail, they’ll give you a much needed boost in your fight against the flu. Of course — overdoing it on these cocktails can also have adverse effects, so be sure to limit your consumption to one a day. Maybe two.
Here’s how The Kitchn recommends you make this healing cocktail.
