Matthew McConaughey’s unhinged tuna salad recipe has taken the internet by storm. Earlier this month, the actor revealed his unusual tuna salad recipe on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast. “I’m a tuna fish salad master-maker,” he told hosts Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer at around the 1:14:10 hour mark. “Every Sunday night, I clean out the fridge and make a badass tuna fish.”
When asked about the details of his now-viral tuna salad, McConaughey said, “Well, it’s a long list of all kinds of things. It starts with the base, you gotta get the good tuna. Next, you gotta watch how much lemon and vinegar you add.”
But that’s not all. McConaughey pours Italian dressing onto the tuna to let it “soak” before adding the other fixings, which includes wasabi, mayonnaise, chopped red onion, finely diced dill pickles, and crispy jalapeno chips seared in hot oil for “a little crunch.” He also adds frozen peas, and corn, which is a must for his tuna salad. While he does like to eat his concoction right away, he says keeping it in the fridge overnight to “coagulate” allows the tuna salad to taste better.
“As every redneck knows, is it better right then or is it better covered after you put it in the fridge?”
“At the end, I’ll go with some apples for some sweetness,” the 55-year-old continued, “a touch of agave to balance out that wasabi.”
As a bonus, McConaughey will eat his salad with more pickles on the side.
“I love to dip my pickle,” he added. “Take a bite of tuna and bite the pickle with Heinz ketchup.”
And though podcast host Segura thought McConaughey’s food hack was brilliant, some listeners were simply dazed and confused by his recipe forcing the recipe to go viral.
The slightly unhinged recipe has now gone viral across the internet with tons of people on Instagram and TikTok trying out McConaughey’s tuna salad recipe for themselves. But, it looks like it still hasn’t won over some the internet’s harshest critics. As one social media user put it, “I’m seeing so many people making tuna salad after that mcconaughey interview and I gotta say….man, Even the ‘best’ tuna salad looks terrible.”
