This category belongs to 12 Years a Slave, which has the complete package of a well-told story, excellent performances and an emotional connection with audiences. Gravity’s unique visual experience could also make it a dark horse contender.

Should Win: Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
Sandra Bullock has gotten plenty of attention and could ride that wave of popularity to a win. Cate Blanchett put together a much deeper and more compelling performance in Blue Jasmine, though.

Chiwetel Ejiofor should win. Chiwetel Ejiofor will win. Apologies to Matthew McConaughey and Robert Redford, who both turned in career-defining performances, but this is just not their year.

All of the contenders make a strong case, but give the edge to David O. Russell to repeat last year’s win with American Hustle. Spike Jonze’s Her deserves serious consideration, though, for its touching, unconventional love story.

Who should win: Julie Delpy (Before Midnight)
Amy Adams is the betting favourite for role as a duplicitous, accent-switching con artist, but Julie Delpy’s powerful turn in Before Midnight is at least equally deserving of acclaim.

Christian Bale deserves the award for disappearing into the role of Irv Rosenfeld, but even Irv himself would have a hard time conning the Golden Globe out of Leo DiCaprio’s hands.

This is a toss-up between Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita Nyong’o and either would be a deserving winner, but newcomer Nyong’o may hold a slight edge only because we already expect Lawrence to be great in every film she does.

Breaking Bad deserves all the awards it’ll get—and that’ll be a lot—for putting together one of the most satisfying final seasons in TV history. Which is too bad for The Good Wife, because it’s truly underappreciated and it just keeps getting better.
