Fall/Winter 2015-2016 Outerwear Guide

Let’s face it this winter has been remarkably lackluster. This past fall (and let’s face it some of our “winter” days) have been the first in recent memory where we’ve been enjoying regular double-digit temperatures.

This is great news because it means we get to reinvent our traditional outerwear rotation this season. So, if you haven’t found the perfect winter jacket yet, you’re in luck. I’ve narrowed down the 4 styles of jackets that will seamlessly carry you from now until spring.

Leather Jacket

Equal parts badass, masculine and versatile; the leather jacket is one of the few true menswear staples for a reason. Fall weather may be the optimal time to wear one but don’t disregard this style when the temperature starts to dip. Layer it under a heavier jacket such as a shearling or topcoat to stay warm or pair it with Chelsea Boots and trousers for the office. If you’re looking for one jacket you can wear with almost anything and will get better with age, this is it.

Rain Jacket

Although warmer temperatures mean not as much snow that precipitation turns into rain, which means another 4 months of spring showers. While natural winter fabrics such as wool and cashmere might keep you warm, they won’t keep you dry. That’s why a waterproof jacket from a brand known for their technical fabric such as Rains or Arc’Teryx deserves a place in your rotation.

Overcoat

Easily the most versatile option on this list, the overcoat is the only jacket that will instantly enhance any outfit. One of Canada’s leading Menswear Bloggers, Jonathan Cavaliere had this to say “My favorite jacket for F/W 2015 is my three-quarter-sleeved glen check overcoat from RW&CO. I love how it can be easily interchanged with different outfits in my wardrobe, while still making a statement on its own.” As echoed by Mr. Cavaliere, look for a jacket that fits with your existing closet but also shows your personality.  The fit should be slim but with room to layer with the length ending mid-thigh. I spoke with John Varvatos at the beginning of the season and he summed it up best “I could name 50 items (for his favorite piece of his F/W15 collection) but I’m calling it the season of the coat.”

Parka

Even with the warmer weather it’s inevitable that in the dog days of February, you’ll need something more heavy duty. Even with all the layering tricks in the world a parka is the only style that will keep you truly warm in -20c. If you want a more stream lined version look for a military inspired style. Regardless of the aesthetic you choose, it’s worth investing in a down filled option with a fur hood to keep you warm till spring.
