Beastie Boys Members Ink Memoir Deal

The Beastie Boys, from left, Ad-Rock, MCA and Mike D. MCA died last year.

The two surviving members of the Beastie Boys, Michael ‘Mike D’ Diamond and Adam ‘Ad-Rock’ Horovitz, are writing a memoir.

According to the New York Times, the duo have signed a deal with Spiegel & Grau, an imprint of the Random House Publishing Group. The book will be edited by veteran hip-hop journalist Sacha Jenkins and will be loosely structured as an oral history of their career.

“The first words out of Mike’s mouth were, ‘I don’t want to do a straight memoir,'” the group’s agent Luke Janklow told The Times. The literary project has been in talks for years, but was shelved when founding member Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch passed in 2012 at the age of 47 after a battle with salivary gland cancer.

Diamond and Horovitz are “interested in challenging the form and making the book a multidimensional experience,” Julie Grau, the publisher of Spiegel & Grau, said. “There is a kaleidoscopic frame of reference, and it asks a reader to keep up.”

No title has been released for the Beastie Boys’ memoir, though it is expected to hit shelves in the fall of 2015.
