Jim Carrey is back in the spotlight, and clearly, he has his sights set on award season. The iconic actor, known for his incredible range, is trading in starring roles in big budget films for a shot at an acclaimed television series. Earlier today, Showtime uploaded a trailer previewing a brand new vehicle for the Golden Globes winner, and it looks like it has the potential to become a critical darling.
Entitled Kidding, the dramedy will tell the story of a Mr. Rogers-esque television host named Jeff Pickles (Carrey), who charms and educates his young audience on their screens everyday, but consistently battles demons in his personal life. In a press release, Showtime aptly describes Kidding as a tale about “a kind man in a cruel world [facing] a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.”
Kidding is also armed with some serious heavyweights in the supporting cast. Aside from Jim Carrey, the show will nab appearances by Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Catherine Keener (Get Out), and Judy Greer (Jurassic World). Creative duties belong to TV scribe, Dave Holstein, who has credits on cult classics like Weeds, The Brink, and I’m Dying Up Here.
As of now, audiences can expect a ten episode season and the first of which is set to debut on Sunday, September 9. You can watch the trailer for Kidding below via the show’s official YouTube channel.
