Earlier today, it was reported by various outlets, that Shawn “Jay Z” Carter has signed an overall deal with production house, The Weinstein Company. The deal includes both small and big screen projects, and is currently slated as a two year contract. The news comes with yet another surprise, as The Weinstein Company revealed that the two powerhouses have already been in development with multiple titles.
In a statement released today, Jay Z detailed his anticipation for the collab. “I’m excited to tell stories from real life prophets, whom through their struggles have changed the world for the better, and others whose stories are filled with fantasy and delight,” Jay Z commented. “I’m already passionate about what we currently have in the pipeline and I’m looking forward to discovering others”.
Weinstein elaborated in their own statement. “Having known Jay on a personal level for many years we are thrilled by the opportunity to expand our relationship. Jay’s ability to influence entertainment and pop culture has gone well beyond music for many years. He approaches every aspect of his career with both determination and effortlessness, making him one of the leading power players in entertainment history. We already have some exceptional projects in the works and are excited to see what more is to come”.
The pairing seems to be a natural fit, as Jay Z has been expanding his business ventures, and has built experience in Hollywood. Within the last few years, Jay has had a hand in producing films like Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, Chris Rock’s Top Five, and the 2014 remake of Annie. Jay Z’s natural passion for film was evident in his companion album, American Gangster, which served as a pseudo soundtrack to the film of the same name. There have yet to be any official announcements of the Jay Z projects in the works, but Weinstein said these would be revealed in the coming weeks.
