After months of secrecy, we’re finally getting our first look at the forthcoming Joker flick. Earlier this weekend, director Todd Phillips took to his Instagram account and uploaded some behind-the-scenes footage from the comic book drama, which is set to hit theatres October of next year.
Phillips sent out two posts for our viewing pleasure, both featuring the new clown prince of crime, Joaquin Phoenix. In the first picture, we see a civilian-looking, yet slightly disheveled man named Arthur. The other update is a trippy video with an overlay teasing the iconic and menacing Joker visage we’ve come to know and fear.
Of course, since the movie’s release date is so far out, we still don’t know a whole lot about the storyline, characters, or timeline the film will exist within the Batman or DC universe. What we do know, however, is that Phoenix will be playing the aforementioned Arthur Fleck, who we will see transform into a super villain throughout the duration of the film. According to official production info, the currently untitled project will be “an exploration of a man disregarded by society that is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”
As we said earlier, Todd Phillips will be helming the project, making this his first comic book-related endeavour. Before he signed on to the Joker project, he cut his chops with blockbusters like War Dogs and The Hangover trilogy. Alongside Joaquin Phoenix, the movie will star Zazie Beetz and Robert DeNiro in undisclosed roles. You can take a look at Phillips’ Instagram teasers below.
