In May of 1997, Luc Besson gave the world The Fifth Element. It was an epic, oddball sci-fi adventure, that gave audiences everywhere, an impressive dose of intergalactic action. The film starred Bruce Willis, and harkened back to golden era epics, all while feeling entirely fresh and unique. The Fifth Element was successful enough at the box office, but the film really reached its apex as a cult hit – so much that fans still herald the flick to this day.
It’s been almost twenty years since Besson has helmed a science fiction movie. Fans have wondered when the director would return to the genre, and remained cautiously optimistic when it was announced that his next film would do just that. Arriving in 2017, is the big-budget space opera, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. It’s the latest from the French visionary, and will star Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, and Rihanna among others.
The movie is based on the classic French comic, Valérian and Laureline, which tells the story of two special operatives who protect the order of the universe. While the plotline may sound generic, the trailer released today proves otherwise. Check out the insane footage below, and be sure to catch Valerian when it hits theatres next summer.
