After signing an exclusive deal with Jay Z’s renegade streaming app, Tidal, Prince’s famed catalogue will reportedly hit Apple Music and the Amazon store very soon. According to reports by Billboard and Pitchfork, the Purple One’s classics will begin to appear on the aforementioned platforms as well as Spotify, after next month’s Grammy awards. The exciting development was teased via purple-drenched Spotify advertisements lining New York city landmarks. You can see one of the examples below, which appeared in Union Square.
While record company and Spotify execs remained tight-lipped about the possibility back in January, more and more confirmation points to the late icon’s music being widely available after the Grammys. The award show is also rumoured to be holding an epic Prince tribute segment, but they too have opted to remain silent.
In 2015, Prince inked a now infamous deal with Tidal in the lead up to his last dual record, HITnRUN. The move prevented any of his previous albums to be streamed on competing platforms. This new deal will be the first time in two years that users of Spotify, Apple Music, or Amazon can hit play on Prince’s classic projects. We’ll have to wait and see how all of this unfolds, when the Grammys go live on February 12. In the meantime, we can always delve deep into YouTube to relive some of Prince’s greatest hits.
