Fans of the beloved 1980’s arcade game, Rampage, are in for a very special treat next year. Thanks to producers over at Warner Bros. Pictures, the iconic midway classic will be coming to the silver screen and it’ll do so with some serious star power. One of Hollywood’s most bankable figures, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, will take on lead acting duties for the anticipated film adaptation, which will also star Malin Akerman, Joe Manganiello, and The Walking Dead‘s Jeffry Dean Morgan.
Canadian filmmaker, Brad Peyton, will sit in the director’s chair, making this the second time he’s collaborated with The Rock. The two previously joined forces for the 2015 disaster flick and box office smash, San Andreas. Since the release of San Andreas, Peyton has been hard at work on the set of the Netflix and Discover co-production, Frontier— the series recently debuted its second season last month and has received positive reviews for its high intensity drama and brutalist aesthetic.
Meanwhile, the upcoming Rampage will honour its 8-bit inspiration by telling the story of genetically mutated beasts wrecking havoc on North America. Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson) will have to find a cure for the disastrous biochemical disease and save the world before creatures completely obliterate everything and anyone that gets in their way.
Rampage will release in theatres on April 17, 2017. You can check out the trailer for the film below via Warner Bros. Pictures.
