The Conner family will officially return to the small screen without their controversial matriarch.
Following weeks of speculation and negotiations, ABC has confirmed that it has picked up a Roseanne spinoff for fall 2018. The series, tentatively titled The Conners, will air on ABC on Tuesday nights 8:00pm, replacing the recently cancelled Roseanne reboot. Deadline reports John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, and Michael Fishman will return as cast members. Roseanne Barr—the star and co-executive producer of Roseanne—will reportedly have no financial or creative connection in the upcoming reboot, “after reaching a settlement with series producer Tom Werner.”
ABC has not revealed how Barr’s character will be written off, but they confirmed the new show will follow the Conners’ lives after “a sudden turn of events.”
Goodman, Metcalf, Gilbert, Goranson, and Fishman released the following statement shortly after the new series was given the green light.
“We have received a tremendous amount of support from fans of our show, and it’s clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts, but in the hearts and homes of our audience. We all came back last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges facing a working-class family today. We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter.”
ABC pulled the plug on Roseanne late last month, shortly after Barr posted a racist tweet directed at Barack Obama’s former senior adviser Valerie Jarrett.
