We Are Your Friends had a historically bad opening last weekend and the landscape for movie-goers over the next couple weeks doesn’t look all that much better. The Transporter Refueled? An M. Night Shayamalan offering? Yet another “He’s not who you think he is!” thriller? Groan.
Thankfully, business picks up in the middle of the month and from then on, there are quality films coming to a theatre near you that will carry us through to the New Year. Here are 10 awesome movies still to come in 2015.
Everest (September 18)
An all-star ensemble gathers for the story of a rogue storm that created havoc for hikers looking to scale the colossal mountain. It should be both visually stunning and a gripping tale all at once, which is all you can ask for in a movie-going experience. You should probably check it out in IMAX if you can.
Bridge of Spies (October 16)
Stephen Spielberg + Tom Hanks + Cold War CIA stuff = Must See.
Spectre (November 6)
All the ridiculous talk about Idris Elba being “too street” to play James Bond aside, we’re still pumped to see the next installment in the 007 collection. Daniel Craig has been great after being doubted when originally cast for Casino Royale and the trailers give this a darker, more menacing feel than some of the other Bond flicks.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (November 20)
It all ends here. Katniss Everdeen’s revolt against President Snow and the Capitol comes to a head in the fourth and final entry in the Hunger Games saga. We recommend binge-watching all the other movies in the series before hitting the theatre for this one.
The Martian (November 27)
After being left on a desolate planet in Interstellar, Matt Damon once again plays an astronaut that gets left behind, only this time he’s on Mars and he’s going to find a way to get home. Director Ridley Scott has a terrific cast and this should be as good as it looks in the trailers.
The Danish Girl (November 27)
Last year’s Oscar winner for Best Actor, Eddie Redmayne, takes a shot at another statue portraying Lili Elbe, the first recipient of male-to-female sex reassignment surgery. Tom Hooper, who won an Oscar himself for The King’s Speech, helmed the project, which should be front and center come this year’s awards season.
In the Heart of the Sea (December 11)
The teaser image was enough to get me interested in this flick at the start of the year and now that it’s finally drawing closer, I’m getting more excited. A historical disaster film by Ron Howard about a ship that was attacked by an angry sperm whale, my guess is we’ll get stunning visuals and strong performances from Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy and soon-to-be-Spiderman, Tom Holland.
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (December 18)
This one doesn’t need an explanation. Moving on.
Concussion (December 25)
The story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, the man who made the first discovery of CTE, is sure to be a lightning rod come Christmas. With Will Smith in the lead role and the NFL in full swing, there should be a ton of interesting (hopefully smart) discussions about the content of this film and the very real problems facing athletes dealing with CTE.
The Revenant (December 25)
Tom Hardy + Leo + The Dude That Directed Birdman (Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu) + frontier justice = what’s not to like?
