Get ready for a blast from the past. According to several trusted sources, including ComicBook.com, developers at Sony are planning to relaunch the original PlayStation. The revolutionary game console, which debuted all the way back in 1994, could once again be found in homes across the world in the very near future.
This juicy piece of gossip stems from the company’s head honcho, John Kodera, who teased the so-called “Classic Edition” and even stated that an announcement could come at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Speaking with reporters, the boss of Sony Interactive said that his brand won’t shy away from classic IPs.
“Our company is always digging up past assets,” Kodera began. “I think there are various ways to do (a classic console). There have been discussions happening (within the company) on what kind of ways are there.” This particular release is a seemingly wise and financially lucrative move. Just last fall, Nintendo debuted their own revamped classic console — the release was a huge success, with pre-orders selling out incredibly quickly.
Of course, as this is still all unfolding, not much is known about the rumoured PlayStation port. One can hope, however, that the classic edition will have internal memory capable of holding classic titles like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro: Year of the Dragon, and Final Fantasy VII. In the meantime, we can only daydream about the endless hours of PS1 gems waiting to be played.
