The Simpsons is the longest-running primetime series in American television history, with the show’s 27th season premiere airing on FOX this past Sunday. Even though The Simpsons has been ordered for a 28th season, it looks like the show may be coming to an end sometime in the next three years, according to longtime showrunner Al Jean.
When the topic of a 30th season came up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jean was asked how much more life the show actually has.
You’re renewed through season 28, with the cast signed on with options through season 30. Do you want to do more after 30?
It’s quite possible that we don’t have to go through the whole negotiation for 30. I wouldn’t be stunned if we stopped at 28, but my bet is on at least 30. But then you’d have to resign them again. If you made me pick one, I’d say the likeliest is ending after 30, but I’ve been wrong before. I thought five seasons was good when I got there (laughs).
Jean also added that he wants fans of the show to enjoy the series finale whenever that day may come. He told THR that he had an idea for and end to The Simpsons that involves the Simpson family getting ready for the Christmas pageant seen in the first episode, so the series would come full circle, and there would be no clear beginning or end.
Matt Groening originally created The Simpsons and the show debuted on January 14, 1990.
