Seventeen years ago, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Wesiz starred in the highly successful action-adventure, The Mummy. The film was a box office smash, and spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs – the final instalment was released only eight years ago. The film’s Egyptian theme and ancient imagery hadn’t been touched upon in Hollywood for quite some time, and the magical nature of the series proved to be a fresh offering for audiences worldwide. While the series was hardly a critical darling, it was incredibly entertaining, and it left enough of an impression that fans are still buzzing about the film to this day.
In case you missed the memo, The Mummy, is now being rebooted. That announcement was made by Universal Studios, more than four years ago. Since then, it wasn’t necessarily clear what the new films would entail. After a very brief tease earlier this week, we’re finally getting our first proper look at the new adventure, and it’s safe to say, it’s looking pretty interesting. Long gone is former star, Brendan Fraser, who is now replaced by Mission Impossible‘s, Tom Cruise. The 54-year-old is at peak performance in the new trailer, with explosive scenes that look to be straight out of his aforementioned spy series.
For fans of the previous iteration, it may take some time to get used to the new faces and narrative direction. If you’re approaching this experience without any nostalgia, however, you’re in for a real treat. The camp of the original title is thrown out of the window, while the intensity is turned all the way up. The new Mummy movie could be one of 2017’s most entertaining entries. Don’t take our word for it, check out the official trailer below and see for yourself. The Mummy lands in theatres this June.
