If The Canyons fails to find an audience, it certainly won’t be due to the lack of buzz. The upcoming film has received an incredible amount of press throughout the past few months, making headlines with reports of serious drama during production between porn star James Deen and tabloid fixture Lindsay Lohan.
Deen and Lohan star in the erotic thriller, which was written by Bret Easton Ellis and directed by Paul Schrader (who wrote Taxi Driver and wrote/directed American Gigolo).
Of course, the majority of the drama has surrounded Lohan, who plays Tara, the actress girlfriend of a rich young moviemaker in the film.
“Similarities? Tardiness, unpredictability, tantrums, absences, neediness, psychodrama — yes, all that, but something more, that thing that keeps you watching someone on screen, that thing you can’t take your eyes off of, that magic, that mystery,” Schrader wrote about Lohan in a piece for Film Comment magazine earlier this week.
Schrader goes on to say that he believes Lohan “has more natural acting talent” than the legendary Marylin Monroe did.
“But, like Monroe, her weakness is her inability to fake it,” the director says. “She feels she must be experiencing an emotion in order to play it. This leads to all sorts of emotional turmoil, not to mention on-set delays and melodrama. It also leads, when the gods smile, to movie magic.”
