Fans of the popular Stephen King franchise, The Dark Tower, have been anxiously awaiting footage from the upcoming cinematic adaptation for quite some time now. Since an initial announcement back in 2007, the epic sci-fi film has seen multiple production delays and a turnstile of directors.
In 2009, the film was to be helmed by Star Wars boss, J.J. Abrams, but this collaboration fell through the cracks after Abrams committed to other projects. Fast-forward two years later and news outlets report the flick being linked to Da Vinci Code director, Ron Howard. Howard eventually transitioned into an executive role and left the director’s chair wide open for someone else to fill. After a few snafus throughout the years, The Dark Tower was finally given life after the Sony Pictures hiring of Nikolaj Arcel, who jumped on board to write and direct the movie. A 2017 release date was confirmed soon after, and now fans are being treated to the first trailer after what feels like a lifetime of waiting.
The Dark Tower stars Hollywood heavyweights, Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, and will incorporate plot aspects from the entire literary franchise. Judging from the freshly released trailer, the film isn’t holding anything back in terms of action and CGI. The epic new footage showcases a world-hopping adventure full of gunslinging and a plethora of fantasy elements. The film lands in theatres on August 4, and will also come equipped with a soundtrack by award-winning composer, Junkie XL. You can watch the entire trailer below via YouTube.
