Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo continues to deny the rape allegations made by Kathryhn Mayorga. The Portuguese footballer released several tweets Wednesday morning, both in English and Portuguese, persisting his innocence, condemning rape as an ‘abominable crime,’ and stating he has a clear conscience through any investigation.
The accusations made by the 34-year old American woman date back to 2009, where she alleges the two met in Las Vegas and Ronaldo invited her to a party in a suite at Palms Hotel and Casino. Mayorga claims that the Juventus forward attacked her in the penthouse suite, exposing his genitals and forcefully making sexual advances on her.
Mayorga states that the footballer apologized profusely after the attack, claiming he was ‘usually a gentleman.’
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has confirmed re-opening Mayorga’s case from June 13, 2009. The initial investigation did not specify the suspect nor the location of the attack, although medical examinations were conducted at the time of the incident.
German publication, Der Spiegel, were the first to report of Mayorga’s lawsuit. The football legend’s Berlin-based lawyer, Christian Schertz, has called the report ‘one of the most serious violations of personal rights in recent years’ and is threatening to sue the German magazine as he believes the report is illegal.
In response to the investigation, Ronaldo established he will be compliant with police through tweeting:
“My clear conscious will thereby allow me to await with tranquillity the results of any and all investigations.”
Mayorga and her lawyer, Leslie Stovall, are allegedly suing to void a $350,000 settlement and nondisclosure agreement, which she claims was forced by Ronaldo and his team in her emotionally volatile state. The lawsuit states that Ronaldo did not fulfill one of the terms of the agreement, which annuls its legitimacy.
Video evidence of the two at the Rain venue in Las Vegas was released by The Sun Online, showing the pair dancing intimately, while Ronaldo holds a drink in his hand. The duo met around the time Ronaldo was offered a world-record transfer fee to the Spanish soccer team, Real Madrid.
