Fragrance Of The Month: Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal Pour Homme Absolu

This month? We try out Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal Pour Homme Absolu…

When we (and by we, we mean the proverbial we) hear the word scandal two things tend to happen: we lose our minds and then, we talk incessantly about it. Think about it. Marilyn Monroe and JFK’s maybe-affair has been entertainment gold for 60 years strong. (Say Goodbye to the President, JFK’s Women, Blonde…) Woody Allen putting a ring on Soon-Yi has and will most likely continue to be tabloid fodder for another 25 years. New and ongoing Nepo babies, Harry’s barely-spare status, Scandoval (possibly our favourite who’s-banged-who triangle) and Trump’s flesh wound—they’ve all got us talking.

So, it takes someone special, like Jean Paul Gaultier to glow-up the word scandal and turn it into coveted speak. Which explains why we can’t stop talking about, or spritzing on for that matter, the French designer’s new Scandal Pour Homme Absolu parfum.

The latest eau to join Gaultier’s well-worn roster, Scandal is warm, woody and unexpected. On first inhalation it is experienced like a gourmand with sweet and velvety, fruity-floral Mirabelle plum notes. Then, on dry down the fragrance transforms into something else, something a little more erotic as it eases into an elixir of creamy, earthy chestnuts. Smooth and grounding sandalwood notes soon waft forward enhancing the elixir with intimate and sensual undertones.

The blend is as rich, regal and refined as it is intoxicating, private and carnal. It leaves us wondering, wanting, and like all good scandals, thinking of little else—thank you very much perfumers Quentin Bisch, Natalie Gracia-Cetto and Christophe Raynaud. Poured into a heavy, gold ombre-hued, glass flask topped with a royal crown, Scandal Absolu has presence, the really delectable kind, which makes it of course the very best type of scandal to obsess about.

Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal Pour Homme Absolu, $168 for 100 ml available at Shoppers Drug Mart.
