Getting Waxed — What You Need To Know

Considering waxing? (Photo: viki2win/Shutterstock)

Considering having some part of your body waxed? Not going to lie: it’s not going to be a relaxing, pleasurable experience. But it does not have to be as excruciating as featured in The 40 Year Old Virgin. Prepare yourself mentally and physically to make it as simple as can be by following these tips.

Make sure your hair is long enough to be waxed

If the area you’re looking to have waxed is one you shave or trim regularly, you’re going to have to lay off of it for about two weeks as you need the hair to be long enough for the wax to adhere to so it can be waxed off.

Be gentle to your skin before and after your wax

Think about it–you’re having warm wax applied to your skin and then having it ripped off to remove hair. This process is going to make your skin more sensitive than usual. Avoid anything that could irritate your sensitive skin; this includes tanning or exfoliating. You must give your skin a chance to heal a bit from the process. (In any case, you should be avoiding the sun’s UV rays, unless you like the look of wrinkled, leathery skin and increasing your risk of melanoma).

Take a pain reliever

Before you go to your appointment, take an aspirin to help alleviate a bit of the pain of the waxing process. This, of course, won’t make it pain-free, but it won’t be as sharp.

Avoid oils and lotions

Your usual liberal application of that rich body oil is a no-no the day of your wax appointment. Heavy lotions and oils will make your skin and hair slick, making it more difficult for the wax to grab onto the hair you want removed.
