Sketch fans are taking over TikTok by copying the internet-famous Twitch streamer and his iconic “What’s up brother” catchphrase. Here’s what you need to know about the latest viral trend.
A new TikTok trend has women approaching their man with their finger raised, asking them, “What’s up brother?” The guys instantly respond by throwing up a finger saying “What’s up brother?” (or a number of other quirky quips) and the women are absolutely delighted and amazed to find out just how many men share the same general response. It turns out “What’s up brother,” as well as the other quirky responses, all come from a popular streamer: Twitch creator Sketch.
Here’s everything that you need to know to understand TikTok’s latest viral “What’s up brother?” trend.
Who is Sketch?
Sketch is a popular streamer over on Twitch from the Houston, Texas area, known largely for his video game streams — particularly of Madden NFL 24, the NFL video game — and occasional “just chatting” uploads. (Sketch is a big Houston Texans fan, usually seen wearing quarterback C. J. Stroud’s #7 jersey) He’s also a good friend of Jynxzi, a broadcaster who catapulted to stardom in 2023 and took home two awards at the recent 2024 Streamer Awards. But, back to Sketch, who boasts a fanbase more than 600,000 deep on the platform, and that’s on top of his more than 245,000 YouTube subscribers.
See, Sketch often greets his viewers with a cheery “what’s up brother” before launching into his content, and its among several well-known phrases that tend to circulate in his community. Included alongside the simple greeting are favorite phrases like “Tuesday Tuesday” and “Special teams, special plays, special players.”
How did the “What’s up brother” trend start?
Although the phrase caught on thanks to Sketch, another TikToker by the name Don Vincent started the trend on TikTok using the streamer’s famous line that’s taking over the internet. In a stitchable video that was posted in late March and racked up over 3 million views in the first five days, Vincent challenged his female viewers to approach their boyfriends with a finger up and ask them, “What’s up brother?” then post the results.

Now, couples all over TikTok are trying out the trend for themselves to hilarious results, often involving the boyfriends continuing with some of Sketch’s catchphrases with some of his additional mannerisms.
So, what does Sketch think of all of the attention? Sketch himself responded to Don’s video, writing in a comment: “TRUST.”
So there you have it. Yet another confusing TikTok trend, that is still going strong, with a pretty simple origin.
