Everything You Need To Know About The Huawei P20 Series

Huawei’s much-hyped P20 series is finally available in Canada. China’s leading tech company originally launched their latest collection of smartphones, including the premium P20 Pro and the standard P20, in March at an event in Paris, but they are just hitting stores across Canada now.

Thankfully, the stylish devices were worth the wait.

An impressive camera system, a sleek design, powerful artificial intelligence, and much more – read on to find out everything you need to know about Huawei’s new P20 series.

These days the camera is arguably the most important feature on any smartphone, and Huawei is blowing away the competition with a device that is a photographer’s dream. (Note: The Technical Image Press Association recently name the P20 Pro as the “Best Photo Smartphone of 2018”.)

The P20 Pro features a world-first triple camera setup co-designed with Leica, that automatically switches between modes to take the ideal shot. There’s a 40-megapixel RGB main lens, a 20-megapixel monochrome lens and a 8-megapixel telephoto lens. On top of that… The selfie camera automatically enhances your skin, while the slow-motion mode allows users to take super slow-motion videos at 960 frames per second at 720p.

Of course, the P20 Pro’s best camera feature is the game-changing night mode option. The night mode keeps the camera shutter open for a full four seconds, allowing the smartphone to collection enough light, while the P20 Pro’s large 1/1.7-inch camera sensor helps reduce blurriness and noise, making nighttime images sharper.

The standard P20 model features two Leica rear cameras (12-megapixel and 20-megapixel lens) instead of three, but is equally as impressive.

Both the P20 Pro and P20 feature a notch at the top, which houses the front camera.

Powerful AI that improves your photos

Both the P20 Pro and P20 devices include unprecedented artificial intelligence (AI) technology that actually improves the photos that you take. Huawei’s revolutionary AI technology is actually able to identify different picture scenarios and automatically adjust its settings to help produce the perfect image. For example: If you are about to take a picture of flowers, a bubble notification will pop up on the screen to indicate that the smartphone’s AI technology has turned on its “flowers” mode, to take a more detailed, vibrant picture.

In the P20 series, AI is able to identify more than 500 scenarios in 19 categories.

Sleek design and gradient colours

The sleek design of the Huawei P20 Pro and the Huawei P20 immediately catches your eye. A total revamp of the P10 models that they replace, the P20 series of smartphones feature an aluminum frame and a super glossy reflective glass back that softly curves into the edges.

The smartphones features a striking, fashion-forward look with colours that demand your attention. Available colours include: black, twilight, pink gold and midnight blue. Those looking to make a serious style statement should look beyond the standard colours and opt for models featuring one of Huawei’s two gradient colours – twilight and pink gold. The innovative gradient colour finish was achieved using an advanced nano-vacuum optical coating technology that renders different colours in different light.

Technical specifications

The P20 Pro features a 6.1-inch OLED display, while the P20 features a 5.8-inch LCD display. Both models are super slim, at 7.8mm and 7.65mm respectively.

When it comes to battery life, multitask away. The P20 Pro and the P20 live up to Huawei’s reputation for outstanding battery life thanks to a Kirin 970 processor (complete with neural processing unit) that can be found in both models.

Going to get wet? The Huawei P20 Pro carries an IP67 waterproofing, while the Huawei P20 carries an IP53 waterproofing.

Fingerprint sensor

Another thing that differentiates the Huawei P20 from other Android phones on the market is the fingerprint sensor. While many manufacturers place the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, the fingerprint function on the P20 series can be found on the front, below the display. That means when your phone is sitting on a table… you don’t have to pick it up to unlock it

Canadian availability

The Huawei P20 Pro and P20 are available across Canada at Rogers, Fido, Bell, Bell MTS, Virgin Mobile, Telus, Koodo and Videotron. The entry level Huawei P20 Lite is available at Rogers and Fido.
