Bad news for fans of the Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure Park at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. The popular attraction will close for good on January 2, 2017.
Disney has confirmed that the bone-jarring 10-story plunge, based on the 1960s horror television show The Twilight Zone (which originally ran on CBS from 1959 to 1964), will be transformed into a new attraction next year inspired by the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The new ride, officially named Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: BREAKOUT!, will make its debut in summer 2017. It will be the first time that Disney has incorporated characters from its Marvel superhero universe at the theme park.
In the meantime, Disneyland is inviting fans to experience the Tower of Terror one last time, with a series of going-away events. Most hyped is the “Late Check-Out” where visitors get to ride The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror each evening after sunset — in complete darkness.
The original Tower of Terror opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World in Orlando in July 1994. The Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure at Disneyland came 10 years after the original, opening its gates to the public in May 2004.
Though the Walt Disney World version of the ride in Orlando will remain open, there is no denying that it truly is the end of an era. California’s Tower of Terror is a classic attraction that will certainly be missed.
