Name: Caroline Wozniacki
Birthdate: July 11, 1990
Birthplace: Odense, Denmark
Claim to fame: She is a former WTA world number 1 player, having held the position for 67 weeks. She currently stands as the 4th ranked women’s player in the world.
Where we can see her next: Wozniacki is currently competing in the U.S. Open Grand Slam tournament in New York, which runs from August 31 – September 13.
Interesting fact: Even though Wozniacki is a former number 1 player and currently holds the 4th ranked position, she has never won a grand slam single’s tournament.
Best quote: “I start laughing every time because the media talks to me like I’m finishing my career and I only have one year left and time is running out.” — on the media hinting that her career is almost over.
Why we love her: The U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York is now underway, which is why it’s only fitting that this week’s WCW be one of the sport’s most popular female players, Caroline Wozniacki. The beautiful, blonde from Denmark and former number 1 player in the world has graced the courts in Flushing Meadows as she still looks for her first single’s grand slam title of her career (which is basically unheard of considering her high ranking, as well as her being 25 years of age).
Wozniacki is by far one of the sport’s most popular players on the female side. She’s beautiful, bubbly, and blonde, formerly was the top ranked player in the world and still holds a top five ranking, holds major endorsement deals from major sponsors (including Rolex, Proactiv, Sony Ericsson, and Babolat, just to name a few), has a killer Instagram account and was featured in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, and used to date the world’s top ranked golfer, Rory McIlroy. Well, actually, they were engaged and Rory called off their engagement earlier this year, just days after sending out wedding invitations. And he apparently broke it off over the phone. You would have thought the poster boy for one of the most proper and well-mannered sports would be a little more chivalrous and gracious in his love life, don’t you think?
Anyways, in the wake of Wozniacki’s heartbreak she seamlessly replaced McIlroy by signing a major sponsorship deal with Godiva Chocolatier. Now Wozniacki is doing better than ever as she climbs up the tennis rankings once again in search of that all-important first grand slam title.
Sorry Rory, you definitely shanked that move. You look like Frodo Baggins’ twin brother and Wozniacki looks like some sort of delicious Danish princess, also not to mention one of the highest-earning female athletes in the world.
You can follow Wozniacki’s matches live at the U.S. Open as she makes a run for a title.
