Name: Neve Campbell
Birthdate: October 3, 1973
Birthplace: Guelph, Ontario, Canada
Claim to fame: Campbell is best known for her role as Julia Salinger in the drama series Party of Five, as well as her role as Sidney Prescott in the famous slasher film series Scream.
Where we can see her next: While it’s been forever since mainstream audiences have heard the name Neve Campbell, it was reported this past summer that she’s signed on to appear in Season 4 of House of Cards.
Interesting facts: At the age of 14 she suffered a nervous breakdown, which resulted in complete hair loss, and that only intensive acupuncture grew it back.
In a public restroom, a fan knocked on her stall door, put a pen and paper underneath and said, “Can I get an autograph?” Campbell replied, “Can I finish peeing first?”
Best quote: “Scream was great for what it was. For a horror film, it was intelligent, it was funny, it took a laugh at itself.” — On the movie that made her a sex symbol.
Why we love her: In the spirit of it being Halloween week, today we’re going to honour our favourite damsel in distress from the slasher genre films, Sidney Prescott. AKA. Neve Campbell. Not only is she a hometown girl (she’s from Guelph), but also she achieved fame by screaming and running away from one of the most feared-masked guys from our childhood, the Scream killer.
Basically, Neve Campbell played a big part of our childhoods, particularly around Halloween or any other time we wanted to scare the sh*t out of ourselves. It was her, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Jennifer Love-Hewitt who all became sex symbols of the 90’s for being the only ones to stay alive in any of these films. What’s even crazier is that those cheesy slasher films made well over $150 million dollars every time. I wonder if they would actually scare us now? Highly unlikely. It would probably be a slapstick comedy now.
But Campbell didn’t only excel in the horror genre — she also became known to major audiences for her role as Julia Salinger in Party of Five.
So where has she been since 1999?
Well like most other actresses of her variety, she’s floated around guest spots on TV shows and made-for-TV movie roles for the past decade or so — unable to find her footing beyond screaming for her life and running and tripping at the most inopportune times. But it was reported this past summer that Campbell will be appearing in Season 4 of House of Cards, which comes out on Netflix in 2016.
We should all take a trip down memory lane this Halloween and thank Neve Campbell for teaching us what it’s like to be truly scared and giving us some of our earliest Halloween memories (nightmares).
